Custom Fender Twin Reverb - Musical Instruments - By Owner - Sale
The source chassis for this amp was a late 70s - early 80s Silverface Twin Reverb. The Cabinet is built from select #2 pine, and has a baltic birch plywood floating speaker baffle suspended in the same way pre-CBS Fender Amps were done. The cabinet has 1/4 finger-jointed corners, identical to pre-CBS amp cabinet construction.
The Tolex is genuine Fender Rough Brown, and the grill cloth is early 60s Wheat colored.
This amp can run Triode mode, like the pre-CBS Blackface Twins, or Pentode mode, like the late 70s Ultralinear Twins.
The amps tone is very lush, with very creamy and musical breakup at higher volumes. In Pentode mode, this amp can peel paint off the walls, so be warned.
Details:
The output tubes are a matched quartet of RCA Blackplate 6L6GCs. They were purchased as near-New Old Stock, and test very strong, near new. Great warm tone.
The post CBS plastic-coated wiring was completely removed, and the amp was hand wired utilizing vintage style cloth covered wire, maintaining lead dress and layout identical to pre-CBS AB763 routing. All electrolytic caps were replaced, and any signal capacitors that had any DC leakage, or drifted off spec more than 20% were replaced. All of the pots and Jacks were cleaned at the same time. A new vintage exact replacement footswitch and amp cover is included.
The bias circuit was reverted to adjustable blackface theme, and modified to allow for the Triode/Pentode switching function. The amp can also run EL34 output tubes if desired, needing only a minor bias adjustment.
The Mid tone control on the Vibrato channel is a push-pull, allowing for disconnection of the Vibrato circuit from the signal path. This eliminates the tone attenuation that many players dislike in Fender amps with Vibrato.
The tonally important preamp tubes, V1, V2 and V4, are vintage Fender (RCA or GE) and test strong/new, with no microphonic issues. The reverb Driver (V3) is a new JJ 12AT7. The Vibrato oscillator (V5) is a GT 12AX7, and the phase inverter (V6)is a GT 12AT7. All tube sockets were cleaned and re-tensioned during the rewire.
The Reverb tank is from the donor Twin Reverb. Older tanks have had their springs stretched over the years, resulting in a much more lush and smooth reverb sound. New or unstretched springs can sound very boingy.
The speakers are vintage Altec Lansing 417 DiaCones, retrieved from a 60s era Kustom amplifier. They have been reconed with Altec components, to 8 ohms imnpedance each. These are the same speakers that Leo Fender used in some of his later Music Man amplifiers.
History:
There are only three of these custom Twin Reverbs in existence. One is the prototype, built in 2006, which I am keeping. It has been used by the Bellamy Brothers, Junior Brown, and many studio sessions. Junior was nice enough to sign it for me.
The second was built for and is owned by Marty Cheyka from the Whitehouse Players band, and Whitehouse Productions. It has been used in many studio recordings and onstage live. It is currently on loan to one of Martys associates in Nashville, for studio session work.
The third is this amp. All three amps have identical components and construction materials. (Martys has some custom inlaid tolex work). They have been described as the warmest and sweetest sounding Fender Twin ever heard.
The asking price is firm. The cost of materials and donor components alone nearly equals my asking price. The amp is currently located at Jerrys Music in Wausau for viewing and play testing.
