Rare Civil War-era Encased Postage - $300


⭕ 3 Cent Ayers Sasparilla Encased Postage (EP-34b) In 1862-63, there was an extreme shortage of specie money - copper, silver and gold coins - as people hoarded the metals. The North responded by issuing fractional currency, paper money in cent denominations. However, there were private individuals who took the opportunity to create their own brand of coins, known as Encased Postage. Even though the outcome of the Civil War was in doubt in 1862, both sides still had faith in the United States Postal Service! These folks took postage stamps, wrapped them around small discs of cardboard, placed a thin sheet of mica on top (to protect the stamp), then enclosed them in a brass case! The back of the case was used to advertise various items; in the case of this specimen, its for Ayers Sarsaparilla, used as a health tonic and soft drink at the time. This specimen is listed in the Friedberg book as EP-34b, with a reference value of $350 in Extremely Fine condition. This specimen shows little sign of wear or circulation, though the stamping of the back is rather thin at the bottom. The mica sheet is intact, with just the smallest of cracks showing. The stamp itself is in very fine condition. Recent auctions at Heritage Auctions have resulted in values of up to $400, but my asking price is just $300.
