1950s Swissa Piccola Portable Typewriter -- Rare, Excellent Condition


⭕ The Swissa Piccola -- one of the first portable typewriters -- was designed by Max Bill, a preeminent Swiss designer whose design philosophy was to seek a flawless blend of form and content, to achieve a true moment of clarity.

This machine was manufactured with famed Swiss precision in Murgenthal, Switzerland (August Birchmeier Co.)

QWERTY keyboard (with a few extra German letters)

I had a new platen (the rubber roller) professionally installed in 2015 at a cost of $150. Any vintage typewriter from this era will have a platen that is rock-hard because the rubber naturally dries out over the years. With its new platen in place, the typewriter types just as it did when originally manufactured. New ribbon also installed.

Excellent working order. Very clean. No rust. The case exterior has some signs of wear, but the typewriter itself is in beautiful condition. Oh, and the key for the case lock is tucked inside the cover, where the original manufacturers sticker is also affixed.

Swissa Piccolas are difficult to find in the United States, and it is rare indeed to find one in such good condition -- and the QWERTY keyboard is a nice plus!

This typewriter is a true collectors item and is priced accordingly. If you want a knock-around typewriter, keep looking -- there are plenty on . But if you desire an heirloom that types like a dream, this Swissa Piccola is for you.
