T5 8X HO HIGH BAY FLUORESCENT LIGHT LIGHTS FIXTURE SHOP OVERHEAD T8
Used T5HO High Output High Bay Fluorescent fixtures. 8 bulbs per fixture, 50W or 51W T5HO 5000K Sylvania supersaver bulbs, premium efficiency programmed start ballasts with parallel operation so fixtures can be switched for 2, 4, 6, and 8 bulb operation. You can reduce lighting when not needed.Fixtures are 15 wide and 8 long. Ballasts are multivolt 120-277V input.
We purchased several of these T5 lights for our facilities but determined that we will have a few pallets extra so we are selling some. These lights are used but are the best fixtures, ballasts, and bulbs that are available. NOT to be confused with any comparable fixture you might find at one of the big box stores. Being in the engineering business I have run a lot of calculations to assess the operating costs of lights and light quality. I have attached some calculations for both qty of lights needed for a given space and lumens, and a quick comparison to new LED fixtures. Its pretty important not to get caught up in sales fluff for LED lighting. Outrageous claims and people end up getting hosed or getting way less light than they need to light a space.
FIXTURES -- USA built with heavier gauge steel , these are not flimsy. Mirrored Aluminum reflectors designed to redirect all light towards the floor where it is needed. Top side is properly ventilated to both operate lamps at the proper temp for highest efficiency, and vent excess heat to protect the ballasts.
BULBS -- Sylvania Premium Supersaver bulbs. High 85+ CRI (color rendering index to get accurate colors and reduce eye strain), highest lumens per Watt in the industry at 96 lumens per watt (reduces energy use and heat), Longest life bulbs you can buy, 5000K color for a whiter, more daylight (NOT blue) appearance. Typical shop lights are about 4100K which is a bit more yellow and can cause eye strain. Due to high efficiency, these only pull 50W but produce more light than typical 54W HO bulbs. That saves 32W per fixture in energy cost.
BALLASTS -- Premium efficiency programmed start ballasts. The best and most expensive ballast you can buy. Most lights you find will come with name brand BUT cheaper instant start ballasts because they can get decent efficiency from them (for sales fluff) but will reduce light bulb life dramatically. Programmed starting is like soft starting the bulb to protect it and make it last longer. From GE, instant start ballasts are rated at 10,000 starts but programmed ballasts are rated to 100,000 starts. Every time you turn the switch on, you cause wear. Programmed ballasts reduce that issue, and premium efficiency ballasts do that plus get better efficiency as instant start ballasts.
Q/A
Would I be better off installing new LED lights to save in energy costs?
I have done the research and run the calculations. Basically to get quality LED lights, you will be spending more than $1/lighting watt (I am only charging 19 cents/lighting watt for the used T5 fixtures). Do NOT believe anyone that says you can light a space with LED for a fraction of the cost as fluorescent. It IS more efficient, but by a margin of 20% for only the best LED lights and there is a LOT of hyped up junk out there. There is also an issue with diffusing LED light properly so it lights the space evenly. Something fluorescent just does better right now.
But I will make the higher costs of LED back in energy savings, right?
Sure! Running the numbers against these used T5 lights, if you use the lights only in the evenings and weekends, you can expect a full return in over 20 YEARS! If you are a business and run the lights 40hrs/week, you will see a return over 10 YEARS! No, I am not exaggerating, I have run the calculation for our own facilities. The attached calculations will clarify.
LED lights are going to last much longer, right?
In a perfect world, they will last a little longer, but if you do the research and talk to those that have had them for a while, you will find out that they dont really last much longer than fluorescent. Everything fails eventually and when you consider that ALL the LEDs are being made in China by the lowest bidder, they are not exactly hitting their sales fluff estimations.
Maintenance costs of the T5HO fixtures vs LED?
Having the best ballasts and bulbs in these used fixtures will certainly hold maint costs down but everything fails eventually. The nice thing with fluorescent is you can change some parts and get running again. LEDs will require a low voltage DC power supply, which will always fail at some point and that is a FACT. Depending on the type of LED you buy, you may be replacing the ENTIRE fixture if it fails. That is going to hurt the pocket book!
How many lights do I need?
Please see attached calculations for estimates. Generally if you want a well lit space, around 100 lumens per sf is ideal. If you just want some light, you can obviously install less. 150-200 lumens per sf will get you very good work room light levels . These lights will produce approx 38,000 lumens per fixture. The numbers are estimates and always advisable to install more lights where shadows could be a problem. I would also advise getting more fixtures than you require to have extra bulbs and ballasts around. The new cost for the bulbs alone is nearly what I am asking for the entire fixtures.
New price on these was over $300 each and even if you compare to the cheapest T5 fixtures watt for watt, I am still at less than half the price of new. These are the best quality fixtures, bulbs, and ballasts, and will make for a quality light source for any building or garage.
