Stephens Memorial

⭕ In l995, my mother gave me a red painted trunk filled with items her twin brother, Stephen, sent home while he served in the U. S. Army between 1941 and l945. I asked my mother if I could create a sculpture using the contents of the trunk. She said, Yes, I would like that. Between l995 and 2001, I created Stephens Memorial. The sculpture, nearly twenty-one feet in diameter and seven feet tall, was featured in the Autumn/Winter 2001 edition of Everyones War. Stephens Memorial is part of the virtual museum created by The Second World War Experience Centre in Leeds, England.

Four womens dresses and one childs dress from several decades following World War II hang from hollow core doors surrounded by photographs of flowers. A bundle of letters that Stephen sent to his sisters rests on one of the dining room chairs that the Tobias family used. The dresses and empty chairs are reminders of countless people who waited for husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, and lovers to return from war.

I dedicated the sculpture to Stephen Tobias and Mary Ann Toumey. Mary Ann was Stephens high school sweetheart. Stephen was killed in Germany on February 28, 1945. Photos of Stephen and Mary Ann lean against an American Legion chair near the flag sent by President Roosevelt following Stephens death. A violin given to Stephen by his father rests against the duffel bag that once protected Stephens Army-issued sleeping bag. Approaching her 90th birthday, my mother mentioned that she would like to hear her brothers violin played. In 2006, she sat in her living room in Jackson Michigan, smiling while she remembered the Hungarian songs that Linda Jo Scott played on the violin. I am looking for a home for Stephens Memorial: A space where veterans and families impacted by war and the loss of loved ones who served our country and community can come, to express their feelings, remember fallen heroes, and heal. Stephens Memorial will be displayed in Artprize 2016

About the artist who made Stephens Memorial

I was born on the same day exactly one hundred years after the birth of Louis Comfort Tiffany.

I still remember that summer morning in June when I was eleven years old. I was walking with my mother pulling the Red Flyer wagon on the way to the Salvation Army in Saginaw, Michigan. Ahead I saw an old rotted wood framed stained glass window leaning on top of rubbish by the side of the street. My mother and I gently lifted the window into the wagon. When we returned home, we carefully removed the square and rectangular pieces of old red, blue and amber glass.

In l977, I signed up for a stained glass class taught by Charles Hudson. A few years later, I designed and created a lampshade for my mother using old glass from three windows in the home where I grew up with my brother and three sisters.

I retired in 2013 after decades of following the dreams of my heart and soul. I created stained glass suns, moons, stars, abstract wall and commissioned window art glass. The textured filigree frequently around or between my pieces of stained glass is my own unique creative expression. I sold these pieces at art shows and prominent galleries in New York, Maryland, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Michigan, and the Virgin Islands. In 1993 and l997 by invitation, I designed and fabricated a Christmas ornament for the Blue Room Tree at the White House. In 2003, I was one of 175 artists invited by The American Concern for Artistry and Craftsmanship to exhibit at Lincoln Center in New York City. In addition, I exhibited in the 7th Annual Craft Art Festival at the Nassau County Museum of Art in Long Island, New York. I specialized in custom, artistic stained glass designs for home and commercial interiors referring to these pieces as Stained Glass Poetry. Under the full moon and stars shining above the Great Lakes of Northern Michigan, I dedicate each of my stained glass creations to whisper to you:

May the choices you make each day actualize the dreams inside your heart and soul.
