MADE IN KNOXVILLE TN - WHITTLE TRUNK & BAG CO STEAMER TRUNK
Wooden trunk has attached hinged tray as well as a removable one. There is a metal label on the top that reads Whittle Trunk & Bag Co - Knoxville Tenn. I am working on a clear picture of this and will add it when I can. Trunk top measures 22W x 36L and it stands 25H.
Heres a bit about the founder:
My mother, Nell Whittle Frazier, was a great story teller, and she entertained her children before the days of television by telling us about her growing-up years in Knoxville. She was born in 1882, so she was a teenager in the Gay Nineties (in the original sense of the word).
Her father, Ransom David Whittle, came to Knoxville about the 1870′s from Sevier County. Somehow he became the owner and president of Whittle Trunk and Bag Co. This company was located at the corner of Broadway and Central Avenue. I dont know if the building is still there. It was up until a few years ago. It filled a need, since trunks were used in houses for storage. Most houses did not have closets. They were used instead of luggage on the trains, wagons, and carriages when people traveled. When I tried to find a Whittle trunk a few years ago for both of the children, they had become collectors items. So the business prospered.
