1860 Antique Alex Beckers Table Top Stereoscope


⭕ An early revolving table-top stereoscope by a noted maker. A notice in an 1859 issue of The Ladies Repository details Beckers stereoscope: To Mr. Becker must be awarded the credit of bringing the stereoscope to its present perfect state. As the result of numerous experiments, he has succeeded in inventing and instrument by which a large number of pictures can be exhibited in succession, thus precluding the necessity of constant changing . The invention consists of an endless chain revolving over two square axles. Each link of this double chain is so constructed as to form a frame on which the picture or slide is placed, ready to follow in its turn, as revolutions are made by its shaft, to one of which a knob is attached outside of the box. Alexander Beckers was an early photographer, artist, inventor and merchant in New York City. Listed in New York directories as early as 1844, he is best know for his early work with the revolving stereoscope designed for glass stereoviews, for which he received a number of patents. Located at 560 Broadway, he was for a brief period neighbors and business associates with E. Anthony. Offering stereoscopes through his own store, he also seems to have sold them through Anthony & Co.; an 1860 Anthony catalog lists Beckers viewers priced at $18 to $50 depending on the model (while stereographs were priced at $3 to $5 per dozen). Eyepiece cylinder on the front with shaped hoods, glazed panel on the opposite side, single knob, Beckers metal label on the side above the knob. 17 x 9 1/2 x 10 3/4 inches, overall. Condition in very good to excellent, all original, never restored....It is loaded with 36 viewing cards and also comes with 10 extra viewing cards WORKS PERFECTLY....these usually sell in the $3000.00 range.
